Summer 1
Welcome to Reception! On this page you can find some useful information about our classwork in Phonics and Literacy, Maths and our Topics for each half-term. We may also share pictures and news from other areas of learning and development across our EYFS curriculum. You will see below 'Star Folders' which will provide more detailed information on individual areas of learning, with links to support you and your child with their learning at home.
This half-term, in Literacy we will be focusing on the book, 'Gigantosaurus' by Johnny Duddle.
Each half-term, we also look in detail at a different Traditional Tale. This half-term it’s Billy Goats Gruff. We will also look at a variety of other books during our Topic time about a range of things. However, this half-term we delve into the world of prehistoric dinosaurs.
In maths, children build on their prior knowledge of numbers from 0 to 10 by delving into numbers 11 -20 and learning how to recognise and write the numerals, alongside finding different ways to represent the numbers using physical resources or drawings. We will also be introducing children to the concept of 'adding more' and 'taking some away' - showing them the mathematical signs related to this too. Finally, we will recap our knowledge of 2D and 3D shapes, then begin to explore selecting suitable shapes for specific purposes and explaining our reasoning.
Our Current Topic for Summer 1 is, ‘Dinosaurs’.
Our afternoons will be filled with art, design, PSHE, RE, PE and music - wherever possible, it will link to our curriculum texts ‘Harry and his Dinosaurs at the Museum’, ‘First Dinosaur Encyclopaedia’, and ‘The Dinosaur Diaries’ whereby the children will learn the names of some key dinosaurs from the past. The children will get to explore what these dinosaurs ate, what their habitat was like and why they are no longer living today. We will take an early look at chronology and begin to add animals to a timeline, including dinosaurs and animals that live today.
We are excited to show you what we have learnt and created!
Thank you, Miss Barnes and Mrs Mason
