British Values

At Shadsworth Infant School we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain.

We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed and lived out through the ethos and work of the school.

Fundamental British values are designed to prepare children and young people for life in modern Britain.

This includes helping pupils understand:

The importance of combatting discrimination
How we can influence decision-making by taking part in democratic processes like voting and petitioning
Our freedom under British law to choose different faiths and beliefs
That the law is there to keep us safe

British values are reflected in our school’s mission statement where it states how the school aims ‘to ensure that all pupils are valued as individuals, encouraging personal development, self-reliance, self-respect, self-confidence and discipline whilst fostering good relationships between children, showing consideration and tolerance of each other.’
Our curriculum provides a vehicle for furthering pupils' understanding of British Values. One of our curriculum threads (aims) is equality and diversity and this is embedded throughout the curriculum.
Picture News is taught each week in classes. Pictures News is a resource which helps to effectively explain British Values to pupils through current new topics happening in the world. Each week the picture news topic connects to and explains a British Value.
RE, and PSHE lessons also provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop understanding of British Values.
‘Pupil voice’ is promoted throughout school and all our children are encouraged to take active involvement within our school and their learning. Our school council is elected yearly and meets weekly to address the issues concerning them around school.
As well as promoting British values we would actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including ‘extremist’ views and principles.
