Personal Development
Personal Development at Shadsworth Infant School.
Personal Development runs through the heart of our school, constantly entwined in all that we do. Beginning their journey as part of our sharing, caring family, it enables us to prepare our children to develop into ambitious, independent and loved individuals.
Our whole school approach focuses on the importance of developing strong, trusting relationships as a basis for success. We strive to equip every child with the knowledge, understanding and attitude to overcome challenges, build meaningful connections and take on responsibilities that will ready them for the next stages in life.
Explicitly taught personal development is delivered through weekly PSHE and RE lessons with online safety and science units contributing to our PD offer. We also supplement the provision with a variety of enrichment activities and mindfulness opportunities. However, personal development is interwoven into all that we do, and is particularly visible in our school values.
Each half-term school observes one value of six; Resilience, Ambition, Trust, Kindness, Honesty and Responsibility. Our weekly Good News assembly allows us to celebrate the children who have displayed our values with the school family and the relatives of those children.
We also hold a half-termly Values assembly whereby we explore the meaning of the chosen value followed by a focus afternoon demonstrating the value in groups.
At Shadsworth Infant School we embrace a mindful approach to the PSHE curriculum, with children revisiting topics annually and building on prior knowledge. PSHE lessons are timetabled weekly, yet PSHE also happens in response to the needs of our children at that time and our additional offer is tailored to prepare our children for their journey through life in the community. Hence, our focus enables us to mitigate some of the societal factors present in the local area with emphasis around;
- Oral health
- Domestic violence
- Substance misuse
- Unemployment
